About The Private Gladiator (Gold)
This is the first part of a 'Private' trilogy that follows the dusty footsteps of Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' to ancient Rome where a brave general gets betrayed by his own men and ends up a gladiator. Unsurprisingly, Antonio Adamo's version cuts down on the gore and amps up the sex. Staying true to the Roman's way of life, Adamo serves up a bunch of orgy scenes filled with anal and DP delights.
All of the language tracks are dubbed. Disc 2 includes many exclusive extras: a 'Making of' featurette (30 minutes), 'behind the scenes' footage (35 minutes), a blooper reel, an interview with director Antonio Adamo, storyboards, bios etc.

Ironically, PRIVATE GLADIATOR suffers from the same shortcomings as the proto-'Gladiator': it's too slick, too bombastic and (worst of all) too boring! Though 'Private' must have spent a small fortune on this title, pain-stakingly re-creating the Oscar-winning blockbuster frame-by-frame, the sex scenes fail to deliver - despite the rather attractive cast. No fancy costumes and boffo CGI-landscapes in the world can make up for a bunch of half-assed fuck scenes. And the lousy dubbing delivers the final death blow. Thumbs down for this gladiator!

Regardless of its impressive budget, this 'Private' production quickly becomes the victim of some seriously bad decision-making. Why, for instance, did they replace the original production sound with a god-awful dubbed track? And keeping in mind that this is a feature film - why do the chicks have to look straight into the camera during the fuck scenes? Since two sequels have been shot back-to-back with the first episode, I doubt that any of the successors will improve on these shortcomings. Technically speaking, GLADIATOR is a bonafide major league adult adventure but it's a damn shame the producers didn't spend more time pondering the issues mentioned above.

Porndom's most spectacular and grandest epic is as fascinating as it is thrilling. A must-see for fans of period dramas. Though the plot is somewhat hard to follow it's nevertheless a gripping yarn with carefully chosen locations. The only true letdown is the godawful dubbing.

After watching PYRAMID in 2001, I didn't think PRIVATE (or any other studio) could produce a more erotic epic! Two scenes are better than others admittedly. The orgy scene with 4 "barbarian" girls and 3 Roman officers is visually stirring, the girls seem to enjoy themselves immensely. Yet the Rita Faltoyano's scene with Tony Ribas is the best boy/girl scene ever! There is tenderness and passion aplenty. No erotic actress has ever done oral or anal sex, so beautifully on film. The DVD is as beautiful as it is erotic, worth buying worth keeping! (Symon Phillips)
